Assis, São Paulo, Brazil (population: 100,000)

Artur Geraldo Pais has been teaching English and Portuguese at public secondary schools for 13 years. His students range in age from 11 to 18, and he teaches an average of 35 students per class. Artur helps his colleagues to face challenges, and also helps the students’ parents to take an active role in their children’s education. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Languages, Literature and Linguistics – English and Portuguese – from Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) Júlio de Mesquita Filho, in 1994, and in Spanish, in 2002. His hobbies include watching movies and listening to music, especially American and British pop and rock. His primary goals for ILEP are to explore new methodologies to engage his students and colleagues in a more participatory and active classroom setting, and to make their students better readers and writers in both English and their own native language, Portuguese.
